Vieste is one of the most important localities on the Eastern part of Gargano. Historical
characters like Federico II of Svevia and Alfonso of Aragona were in Vieste because
of its geographical and strategic position. In the 15th and 18th centuries Vieste
had been attacked by the Turks. In 1554 there was a Turkish assault led by the famous
corsair Dragut Rais, that whose raid is still reminded by a rock - in the heart
of the medieval quarter - called "Chianca Amara" (bitter stone) on which hundreds
of Vieste’s inhabitants had been beheaded.
